News - World Water Day 2024
March 22, 2024
The motto of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’
Access to clean water can bring peace or ignite conflict at the same time
When clean water is scarce or when people have unequal or no access to drinking water, tensions within communities or between countries are inevitable. The aim of today's World Water Day, which was established by the United Nations in 1993, is to draw attention to the importance of water as the basis of life for humanity. After all, water is a limited and increasingly scarce resource. Over 2.2 billion people currently have no or only limited access to clean water. This is not without consequences. Access to clean water can create peace, but it can also spark conflict. With this year's motto 'Water for Peace', the UN is drawing attention to this important issue.
Herco supports projects for a sustainable water supply in South Sudan
Sustainable water treatment will play an increasingly important role in the future and water quality will be crucial for living conditions on this planet. This is why Herco has been supporting International Aid Services Germany e.V. with €7,500 per year for water projects in South Sudan since 2023. To change the situation in the crisis-ridden country, the NGO supports projects that improve the population's water supply and offers peacebuilding seminars. The aim is to reduce tensions between former conflict parties in South Sudan. After all, conflicts often ignite over scarce water resources. Herco's donation will help to improve the sustainability of the water supply in the Nimule region of South Sudan in the coming years and minimise conflicts.
Sustainable action is our principle in order to preserve the basis of life for future generations. Read more in our ESG report:
